Transdev Dublin Light Rail: Expertise of a Tram Train Following a Collision
Background & Challenges
Transdev Dublin Light Rail, operator of the Luas tram network in Ireland and a subsidiary of the Transdev Group, asked MASTERIS in 2022 to conduct an expertise following accidents that occurred on one of its trains.
The main objective of the mission was to provide a Second Technical Opinion Independent of that of the manufacturer, in order to rule on the Body Repairability Damaged and of its Return to service.
Objectives
Transdev DLR expected from MASTERIS:
- An accurate assessment of the condition of the body structure of the crashed train.
- A financial estimate of repairs with a controlled margin of error of ± 15%.
The Challenge
Evaluate the return to service of a partially dismantled train, from which several pieces of equipment had been removed to equip other trains in the fleet. This situation made the analysis more complex, requiring a systemic vision in order to precisely identify the elements to be reconstructed, tested or replaced to ensure the safety and compliance of the whole.
The MASTERIS solution — Services provided
Mobilization of 3 technical experts in Dublin including:
- The national point of reference for Cash Structure and Interfaces at the SNCF Material Engineering Center.
- The cash register and structure technical expert at the Bischheim Industrial Technicenter.
- A Rolling Stock System expert.
Realization of technical expertise of train body structures, missing equipment, and embedded systems (electrical, door, brake and passenger information).
Results
The repairability opinion was issued to the manufacturer with proposed solutions.
The damaged train will be put back into commercial service at the end of 2025.

In Dakar, we are far from major European rail networks, so in the event of incidents it is important to be able to react quickly and independently. This is why it was important to improve the skills of the teams in lifting our Coradia machines and our work trains. MASTERIS was able to respond quickly and effectively to our expectations.
Within Hexafret, regulatory monitoring already exists on which ECE relies. However, it proved necessary to complete this monitoring in order to cover all the countries in which Hexafret operates, in particular Germany, Spain and Italy. Hexafret therefore turned to MASTERIS in 2024 to provide this service.
After a first year of collaboration, Hexafret satisfied with both the content and the contractual relationship, extended the regulatory monitoring contract in 2025. We appreciate its synthetic side.
