RATP Dev Florence: General Overhaul of the SIRIO Brakes

Background & Challenges

In 2023, RATP Dev Florence, a subsidiary of the RATP group specializing in the operation of urban transport networks in Italy, requested the expertise of MASTERIS in the context of the maintenance of its tram fleet.

The project focused on the 2nd general overhaul of power plants and brake calipers, critical equipment for the safety and performance of trains. This operation was part of a 3-year multi-year contract, with the aim of guaranteeing the reliability of rolling stock while maintaining optimal operational continuity on the Florentine network.

Objectives

  • Conduct in-depth technical expertise on braking equipment.
  • Conduct a general overhaul of brake units and calipers, accompanied by targeted reliability actions.
  • Perform corrosion treatment on the components concerned.
  • Extend the life of brake components in order to optimize their operational potential over time.

The Challenge

Maintain a high level of reliability and performance, despite the natural aging of the components and their exposure to demanding operating conditions (wear and corrosion).

The MASTERIS solution — Services provided

As part of this service, MASTERIS mobilized its technical and logistical skills to ensure complete and maintain braking equipment:

  • Complete overhaul of the pump unit and the power plant control unit.
  • HC1P28W generation brake calipers revision.
  • Replacement of internal components, gaskets and fasteners.
  • Thorough cleaning and depollution of internal circuits.
  • Functional tests and comprehensive checks of revised components.
  • Anti-corrosion treatment and repainting of organs.
  • Detailed traceability of all the operations carried out.
  • Organization of the logistical delivery of organs between France and Italy.

Results

  • Control of Crossing Times Thanks to a Dimensioned Industrial Tool, Applying the Standards of Operational Excellence
  • Price transparency throughout the duration of the contract, with a clear commitment to the replacement of parts.
  • Local human support, with the mobilization of teams around the challenges of Quality, Cost, Deadlines and Security.
  • Customer satisfaction rated 9/10 by the Customer in 2024

In Dakar, we are far from major European rail networks, so in the event of incidents it is important to be able to react quickly and independently. This is why it was important to improve the skills of the teams in lifting our Coradia machines and our work trains. MASTERIS was able to respond quickly and effectively to our expectations.

Within Hexafret, regulatory monitoring already exists on which ECE relies. However, it proved necessary to complete this monitoring in order to cover all the countries in which Hexafret operates, in particular Germany, Spain and Italy. Hexafret therefore turned to MASTERIS in 2024 to provide this service.

After a first year of collaboration, Hexafret satisfied with both the content and the contractual relationship, extended the regulatory monitoring contract in 2025. We appreciate its synthetic side.
