Renovation of the Support Bars of the Tours Tramway: A Project of Industrial and Artistic Excellence!
The city of Tours, with its Citadis 402 tram network, stands out as a work of art with an interior and exterior design that is resolutely distinctive. The atmosphere is quite unique for users due to the design of the proposed facilities. The maintenance bar renovation project, led by MASTERIS, is part of this artistic and symbolic adventure.
Our field of intervention focuses on the control of surface treatments in order to offer a high level of industrial quality because it requires maintaining the visual and unique identity of each of the Tourangelle tram trains.
Background and Importance of the Project
The Tours tram network, inaugurated in 2013, was designed not only as a new means of transport, but also as an element of urban design. The trains were designed by RCP Design Global, integrating artistic elements that make them an architectural symbol of the city.
After more than ten years of service, the support bars require industrial renovation in order to restore a visual and pleasant aesthetic for users.

Technical and Logistical Specificities
The collaboration with the SNCF Industrial Technicenter in Saint-Pierre-des-Corps is decisive on this project because of its industrial experience and its local proximity to Keolis, which is in charge of the operation and maintenance of the assets of Citadis trains.
Our service includes major operations, such as shot-blasting and powder-coating of grab bars, using proven and high-quality industrial processes.
Our technicians use thermosetting powder coatings with two types of colors.
This industrial operation makes it possible to upgrade the visual identity of the Citadis 402 trains in its original interior colors. It also makes it possible to meet the standards of maintenance in operational condition required by Tours Métropole Val de Loire in order to guarantee a high level of cleanliness.
Shuttle boxes were made by Keolis to protect and transport the logistical transport of the support bars between the two sites.
Project progress
The renovation of the 40 Citadis support bars per train follows a tailor-made industrial and logistical treatment process in order to meet the crossing times requested by Keolis:

- Each grab bar is visually inspected by Keolis to determine what renovation work needs to be done.
- The Grab Bars are then rid of their original paint, which has deteriorated over time.
- A custom painting process was proposed by the referent of the painting and lamination commission of our engineering department in order to provide robustness and a guarantee over time.
- An express withdrawal and delivery service for some of the parts allows Keolis to carry out the operation of dismantling and reassembling the support bars in the required time.
MASTERIS ensures the interface and coordination of all the actors involved in the stages of industrial renovation.
Respect for the visual identity
This collaboration is organized with the preservation of art and design for each of the tram trains. A unique aspect for this project because it focuses on respecting the visual identity of the 21 trains. Unique buds designed by several local actors in the Tourangelle region (vocational high school and foundry artisans), are dismantled and reinstalled by Keolis teams in the process of industrial renovation.

The Advantages of MASTERIS for this Project
MASTERIS markets local skills with its network of technical experts, specialized in the engineering and maintenance of railway and urban rolling stock. The Western Engineering Cluster and the industrial skills of the SNCF Technicentre in Saint-Pierre-des-Corps are associated with this high-quality renovation program in order to contribute to the success of this project.
Our teams are fully mobilized with Keolis to meet the expectations and satisfaction of Tours Métropole Val de Loire.
The industrial program has started since 2021 and the completion of operations is scheduled for 2025.
We thank all the stakeholders for the success of this industrial program and Keolis for renewing their trust.
