Eurostar - Equipping E300 trains with the new European signalling system

Background & Challenges:

By the end of 2027, all trains in Belgium must be equipped with ETCS, a European signalling system replacing the TBL1+. To comply with this requirement, Eurostar has trusted MASTERIS with the equipment of its 8 E300 trains by 2028, in an ongoing partnership with SNCB. After the modification of a prototype train and the authorization expected in December 2025, the other trains will be adapted in the workshops in Forest and Salzinnes.

Objectives:

The ETCS project for Eurostar aims to bring E300 trains into compliance with Belgian obligations by the end of 2027, while replacing the TBL1+ system with a single European standard in order to guarantee cross-border interoperability. It also aims to improve safety through more efficient speed control, to modernise the fleet with equipment that complies with the most recent technical standards and to strengthen industrial cooperation between Eurostar, SNCF (via MASTERIS) and SNCB.

The challenge:

  • Technical and regulatory challenges: integrating ETCS into existing trains, carrying out tests and obtaining marketing authorization before the end of 2027.
  • Organizational challenges: coordinate the collaboration between Eurostar, MASTERIS, MASTERIS, SNCF and SNCB, while maintaining the availability of trains for commercial service.

The MASTERIS solution - Services provided:

Our solution for equipping ETCS Eurostar trains is based on a global approach in engineering, installation and project management, based on its recognized expertise:

  • MASTERIS is setting up a multidisciplinary team (engineers, purchasing, project managers), in close collaboration with SNCF Matériel, to define the technical strategy, pilot the modifications and ensure the interfacing of the ETCS system with the E300 trains.
  • We provide a turnkey offer, from the engineering phase (studies, industrialization, participation in trials) to operational implementation (modifications in SNCB workshops, test support, obtaining the AMM), while guaranteeing controlled management of costs and deadlines.

Result:

The expected results of the project are:

  • Bringing all E300 trains into compliance with Belgian and European regulations before the end of 2027.
  • Increased interoperability of Eurostar trains on European networks thanks to ETCS.
  • Improving safety with a more reliable and modern speed control system.
  • Strengthening industrial cooperation between Eurostar, MASTERIS, SNCF and SNCB.
  • Modernization of the fleet to ensure the sustainability of the London-Brussels service and to anticipate future technical needs.

In Dakar, we are far from major European rail networks, so in the event of incidents it is important to be able to react quickly and independently. This is why it was important to improve the skills of the teams in lifting our Coradia machines and our work trains. MASTERIS was able to respond quickly and effectively to our expectations.

Within Hexafret, regulatory monitoring already exists on which ECE relies. However, it proved necessary to complete this monitoring in order to cover all the countries in which Hexafret operates, in particular Germany, Spain and Italy. Hexafret therefore turned to MASTERIS in 2024 to provide this service.

After a first year of collaboration, Hexafret satisfied with both the content and the contractual relationship, extended the regulatory monitoring contract in 2025. We appreciate its synthetic side.
