Rouen Normandy Metropolis: General Overhaul of Citadis 402 Tramway Bogies

Background & Challenges

In 2022, the Rouen Normandy Metropolis, the authority organizing urban transport mobility in Rouen, awarded, through a public contract, the industrial implementation of the general overhaul operation 600,000 km from the bogies in its tram fleet.

This industrial renovation project consisted in treating the 27 Citadis 402 trains for a period of 3 years with our Industrial Excellence Center specializing in running gear.

Objectives

The main objective of this service is to:

• Carry out an operation to maintain the bogies in operational condition for the next 10 years of service in order to maintain operational comfort for travelers.

• Modernize the trains by integrating a new system for lubricating wheel flanges equipped with a biodegradable lubricant in order to limit the environmental impact of the trains on the infrastructure.

• Support the city and its operator on specific wear and tear issues related to the operation of its rolling stock.

The Challenge

We were able to coordinate all the actors to meet the challenges of Quality, Costs, Time and Security of the service with:

• The MASTERIS project department for the management, monitoring and coordination of the various contributors,

• MASTERIS railway engineering for carrying out technical studies concerning the implementation of the new pipe lubricator system,

• The SNCF Voyageurs Material Engineering Center for Technical Expertise,

• The SNCF Voyageurs Industrial Technicenter of Nevers Languedoc for the industrial renovation of bogies,

• Texelis for the industrial renovation of bridges,

• Bijur de Limon for the supply and implementation studies of the new pipe greaser system,

• CBM Rail for the supply of parts kits,

• The STRMTG for the examination of the technical file for the modification of the new pipe lubricator system,

• Transdev Rouen, as operator and central interface of this project.

We were able to support the customer in the implementation of industrial and engineering solutions in order to respond to industrial hazards and technical problems encountered on bogies.

The MASTERIS solution — Services provided

We have been able to mobilize the multidisciplinary know-how of our teams to meet the various challenges of Quality, Cost, Time and Security of the market with:

• The carrying out of engineering studies for the integration of the new lubricator section with support from the operator in the validation of the new interchangeability device with the STRMTG.

• Carrying out dismantling and reassembling the sub-assemblies equipping the bogies for technical upgrading.

• The carrying out of electrical wiring work and the replacement of wear parts.

• The carrying out of shot-blasting operations on structural parts followed by repainting in order to ensure their long-term protection.

• Carrying out Non-Destructive Examinations (NDT) on structural parts in order to confirm the integrity of mechanically welded frames (spars, fixing parts,...).

• Carrying out dimensional checks in order to guarantee the conformity of components within their tolerances.

Results

• A satisfaction from the Rouen Normandy Metropolis recognized during the duration of the contract linked to the commitment of operational teams and the quality of support.

• Support for the customer in readjusting deadlines in order to deal with the hazards encountered related to the health condition of the parts and the technical problems encountered on the bogies.

• The provision of a team of experts in railway maintenance to offer tailor-made solutions in the resolution of technical problems.
