Equipping E300 trains with the new European signalling system

On December 31, 2025, all trains operating in Belgium must be equipped with the ETCS (European Train Control System). In order to standardize safety systems and the interoperability of equipment between European countries, ETCS has been deployed very successfully since the 2010s on the various national rail networks of European countries.

Today, Eurostar trains operating between London and Brussels are equipped with the TBL1+ standard. On October 4, 2022, Eurostar therefore signed a contract with MASTERIS in order to equip their entire E300 fleet with ETCS by the beginning of 2028 in order to comply with the new European standard.

What is ETCS?

The European Train Control System (abbreviated ETCS, acronym for European Train Control System) is an innovative rail signalling system associated with speed control. It is a component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS, acronym for European Rail Traffic Management System) which will eventually replace the different national signalling systems of European railway networks, in particular the TBL1+ system in Belgium. This unique and standard system should allow for easier interoperability of rolling stock on cross-border traffic in Europe.

An ongoing collaboration between MASTERIS and the Belgian group SNCB

The Eurostar London - Brussels line consists of 8 E300 trains. The latter are equipped with the TBL1+ system which must be replaced by the new ETCS standard. As part of the implementation of this contract, a multidisciplinary MASTERIS-SNCF team, composed of Engineering, the Purchasing Department for parts equipment and project managers will set up the integration, installation and interfacing between the new system and the train. The calendar must take place in 3 phases for the park to be fully equipped in 2028.

A key milestone in phase 2 was reached in early June with the end of the modification of the prototype train by the SNCB teams. After the series tests necessary to get the train back on track, the project begins the phase of qualification tests necessary to obtain the AMM (marketing authorization). This should take place in September 2025. After this date, the 7 remaining trains as well as a reserve engine will be modified one by one by our industrial partner.

This contract also lays the foundations for a brand new collaboration between MASTERIS and SNCB. Indeed, for the first time, industrial execution will take place in SNCB workshops and not in an SNCF technical center. The sites selected for the installation of the equipment are the High Speed Maintenance Technicenter in Forest, in the south of Brussels, and the SNCB Industrial Technicenter in Salzinnes. Throughout the period of execution of the contract, SNCB will benefit from the support and assistance of SNCF teams.

In Dakar, we are far from major European rail networks, so in the event of incidents it is important to be able to react quickly and independently. This is why it was important to improve the skills of the teams in lifting our Coradia machines and our work trains. MASTERIS was able to respond quickly and effectively to our expectations.

Within Hexafret, regulatory monitoring already exists on which ECE relies. However, it proved necessary to complete this monitoring in order to cover all the countries in which Hexafret operates, in particular Germany, Spain and Italy. Hexafret therefore turned to MASTERIS in 2024 to provide this service.

After a first year of collaboration, Hexafret satisfied with both the content and the contractual relationship, extended the regulatory monitoring contract in 2025. We appreciate its synthetic side.
